Race Against Drugs is a substance abuse prevention program developed by the National Center for Prevention and Research Solutions (NCPRS). The idea was simply to use the color, speed, and excitement of motorsports to attract the attention of kids and their families and provide them with unique substance abuse prevention awareness and educational materials to change their attitudes, knowledge and ultimately their behavior.
From the successes of the Race Against Drugs program, NCPRS developed an evidence-based substance abuse prevention curriculum called Stay on Track (SOT). In the 2007-2008 school year, SOT is being implemented through a federal partnership with the National Guard to over 120,000 middle school students in 45 states and territories.
NCPRS’s goal for the coming year is to develop the a new “Rad Racing Team”, which will consist of a select network of racers, teachers, schools, companies, and local organizations interested in conveying a positive message to kids through the use of role modeling, peer-to-peer presentations, and promotional events. The “Rad Racing Team” will provide students and their families with the tools and opportunities to make better decisions and to help them commit to a healthy future.
